During the student period (the first 12 months), your time is divided between your department and a number of external bar associations. The rest of the training period is completed in your department. Trainee and student lawyer opportunities available through the 2018 Articling Law Program Departments use the services of external counsel for much of their judicial work. This means that articling students have the opportunity to work with and learn from experienced lawyers who are leading experts in their respective fields. Day after day, you will be involved in advising this organization on many legal aspects, which will be determined to a large extent by the nature of the organization`s work and the industry in which it operates. Lawyers working in ministries have the opportunity to bring cases before the courts or tribunals. However, the extent of this opportunity can vary from department to department and team to team. Applicants who wish to focus primarily on an advocacy career should take this into account. Although the general structure of education may be similar to that of elsewhere, the nature of the work is likely to be very different. You will experience a number of interesting legal works – and may have the opportunity to participate in the legislative process itself. Whether the government creates new laws, buys goods and services, investigates mergers that could restrict competition, sets the annual budget and collects the right amount of tax, employs people, fights organized crime or defends its decisions in court, it needs a high level of legal advice on a range of complex issues. For this work, the government needs its own lawyers who understand its business to provide legal services to a broad clientele – including a number of central government departments and other government agencies.
